The Apple Wishlist: Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
3. Remote control and management: Idea 2

Idea 2: Remote management
As Apple branches out into wireless Airport devices designed for home use, and Mac OS X Server based Xserve hardware products targeted at businesses, they have begun to design interfaces that do the same thing, but present it in different ways. This is incredibly annoying.

Apple could really add value to networking gear and create a strong brand identity by bringing a single interface to all their networking and server products. While Apple's Airport admin tools are nice, they really should be consistent with the admin tools that perform the same functions in Mac OS X Server, and for that matter, Mac OS X.

It's actually hard to complain about the Airport Admin Utility, considering that everyone else's wireless routers have a horrible web based configuration interface. But why not present the Airport base station's network configuration exactly like System Preference's Network, rather than just being coyly similar?

Why not present DHCP, NAT, Port Mapping and WPA configuration identically, whether they are provided by hardware devices (Airport) and or through software services (Mac OS X)? Why not make configuring a real base station (an Airport) identical to configuring a software basestation (Internet sharing)?

Clearly there are valid reasons to present a different level of complexity between Mac OS X and its Server counterpart, but the basic layout of functions shouldn't need to dramatically change. Apple is good at figuring out how to present a single interface that provides a varying degree of complexity. They just need to flex that particular muscle to solve this problem.

Idea 3: Master remote control
